Send Slack Notifications with Motion.io Automations

With Motion.io’s built-in Send Email automation action, you can set up workflows in just minutes that automatically notify a Slack channel whenever something happens in Motion.io—no external tools like Zapier required.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to use Motion.io’s automated workflows to post updates directly to Slack, along with step-by-step instructions for creating them.

📣 Note: While you can set up automated workflows like the one described in this guide within active Motion.io projects, we recommend creating them in your project templates instead. Automations added to a template are automatically included in every new project created from it—so you only have to set them up once.

How This Automation Works—and Ways to Use It

By pasting the unique email address Slack provides for sending messages to a specific channel into Motion.io’s Send Email automation action, you can automatically post updates to Slack whenever something happens in a project.

Some examples of notifications you can send to your company Slack using this workflow include:

  • A specific task or stage being completed
  • A form being submitted, or a form field answered in a particular way
  • A project being created or marked as complete

Setup Instructions

To create this automation, start by identifying the Slack channel you want to notify and the specific activities in your Motion.io projects that should trigger those notifications. Once you’ve decided on these details, head over to Slack.

Step 1

In Slack, open the channel you want to send email notifications to. In the top-right corner, click the three dots (More actions) and select Open channel details from the dropdown menu.

In the modal that opens, click the Integrations tab, then scroll down and select the Send email notifications to this channel option.

Step 2

In the next modal, click Copy to grab the email address provided by Slack.

Step 3

Head back into Motion.io and open the project template where you want to create an automation that notifies Slack whenever the event(s) you specify occur. In the Automations tab, click the button to add a new automation.

Give your automation a clear, descriptive name, then choose the trigger event(s) you want Slack to be notified about. (For ideas, refer back to the beginning of this guide.)

Step 4

Scroll down to the Actions section of your new automation, click Add Action, and select Send Email from the menu.

Finally, paste the email address you copied from Slack into the Email Addresses field. After you click Save, the Slack channel linked to that email address will receive a notification whenever the trigger event(s) you specified occur.

Even better—if you set up this workflow in a project template, it will automatically carry over to every new project created from that template. This ensures you’ll get consistent Slack notifications across all projects without any additional setup!
